Being an au pair or demi pair is a cultural experience in which, in exchange for helping out with childcare or nanny duties and light housework, you are welcomed as a member of the family and offered meals & accommodation.

Au pair or demi pair duties

Au pairs should help with childcare and light housework. Each family has their own requirements but typical duties include the following:

  • Wake the children in the morning and get them ready
  • Prepare breakfast and lunch for the children & clean up after meals
  • Take children to/from school
  • Shopping and light housework
  • Assist the children with their homework
  • Initiate and supervise play
  • Help the children with their bath and bedtime routine
  • Baby sitting

Program providers

ELC works with 2 separate providers to offer au pair and demi pair placements:

  • Smart Aupairs offer full-time au pair experiences, which take place after the end of the English course on a Working Holiday visa;
  • Priceless Exchange offer demi pair experience (part-time au pair), which take place during the course, either on a Working Holiday visa or on a student visa.

Rewards

  • Au Pair: You will be hosted in the family home (in your own private room) with full board (3 meals per day). You will also receive pocket money. In addition, Smartaupairs will reward you with a bonus at the end of the au pair experience.
  • Demi Pair: You will be hosted in the family home (in your own private room) with half board (2 meals per day) Monday to Friday and full board (3 meals per day) at the weekend.

Who can join?

Each provider has their own set of elligibility criteria and program requirements. Depending on the program chosen, different requirements apply. For bookings or more information, please contact ELC for details.

Au pair

Available to applicants who:

  • Are aged 18-30, non-smoker, not married, do not have children and do not have a criminal record
  • Are eligible for a Working Holiday visa (subclass 417) or a Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462)
  • Enrol for a minimum 4-week course at ELC
  • Reach a minimum intermediate level of spoken English by the end of English course
  • Are prepared to commit to a minimum of 6 months with the family
  • Have childcare experience (min 200 hours)

Demi pair

Available to applicants who:

  • Are aged 18+, non-smoker (social smoker okay), do not have children and do not have a criminal record
  • Will come on a student visa or a Working Holiday visa (subclass 500, 417 or 462)
  • Enrol for a minimum 12-week course at ELC
  • Reach a minimum high pre-intermediate level of spoken English
  • Are prepared to commit to a minimum of 12 weeks with the family
